In many ways, the Autism Families CONNECTicut swimming class at the Star Hill Family Athletic Center looks like many others, with parents and siblings watching as kids explore the water with guidance from instructors. 

But this particular swimming class is special, for a variety of reasons.

The non-profit, volunteer group modifies the Tolland swimming class, and its other recreational offerings, to the needs of autistic children and their families.

For the swimming students, this means smaller class sizes, which diminishes potentially disturbing noise levels, and one-on-one attention from the volunteer instructors.

"It's somewhere exciting to go where he feels accepted," said Tolland resident Mary Bornstein, whose son Cameron attends the class, which is being offered four times in January.

She said that swimming, in particular, is great for her son since the water can be calming for him.

"It has a really therapeutic effect," Bornstein said.

Autism Families CONNECTicut Sports Programming Director Tom Porcello added that the class is also important for safety reasons.

"These kids have some exposure to the water," he said, pointing out that the experience is key since some autistic children have a tendency to wander.

But beyond the benefits of safety, Porcello said that the classes are essential for bringing families and the local autism community together.

"It's a no judgment zone," he said of the classes. He added that many parents also bring siblings to the class, allowing for an important role reversal in some families.

And so far, Bornstein said she applauds the class' success.

"It's been fabulous," she said.

Porcello said that the organization may hold another swimming program at Star Hill, if there's enough interest.
