Give the Gift of Life at Tolland Blood Drive

The Red Cross Blood Drive will continue until 4 p.m. near Cardio Express.

It may look a bit different from the usual blood drive, but don't let the Red Cross bus throw you. The organization is holding a life-saving blood drive until 4 p.m. Tuesday, working out of a bus in the Cardio Express parking lot in Tolland.

"We only use the bus when we can't use the building," said Charge BSNT Stacy Pehowdy-Akers, explaining that while the drive is using part of the Cardio Express building, the gym did not have adequate room to run the entirety of the blood drive.

So instead, after registering inside, donors get to recline on some seriously comfortable bus beds while bolstering the region's critical blood supply.

"There's always a shortage," Pehowdy-Akers said, adding that winters are particularly difficult times for donations.

However, there's no stopping Tolland resident Susan Zaske who said that she takes time to donate every 56 days.

"It's a way to give back," she said. "When you become a mom, these things become more important to you."

Zaske said that she donated 24 pints of blood while living in Georgia, before moving up north. She explained that she has a sought-after blood type, which also inspires her to donate.

The drive will remain open until 4 p.m. For information on blood donations, visit the Red Cross website.
