Tolland's Resident Bobcat

Tolland citizens have seen the local feline moseying around town.

Tolland may or may not have any , but it's certain that a resident bobcat has moved in.

According to Animal Control Officer Tina Binheimer, the animal, or possibly a few animals, has been seen several times over the last few months in the Shenipsit Lake area. She added that there have also been sightings near Cider Mill Road, Eaton Road and Old Post Road.

While Binheimer said that bobcats are not generally a threat to people, she cautions residents to admire the animals from indoors and to take precautions with small animals.

"Our office always recommends that you keep cats indoors, poultry and fowl secured in coops and runs, and that goats and other small stock be secured during the dusk to dawn hours for their own protection against the many animals in our area which could hunt them," she said.

She added that if a bobcat acts aggressively towards a human, to call Tolland Animal Control at 860-871-3676 or the DEEP at 860-424-3333 for assistance.

National Geographic describes the bobcat as a nocturnal, elusive animal that is about twice as large as a housecat. For more information on bobcats, visit the National Geographic Web site, and for a close up picture of the Tolland feline, visit the town's Web site.
