Aloha, Friday! School Days, Johnny Appleseed & Pie

Check out year's proposed school year calendar. Hear what activities are at the senior center, schools and library today. In honor of Johnny Appleseed Day, we also have a recipe for apple day.

1. It looks like the right kind of day to be under the weather with heavy rain throughout the day. With the National Weather Service predicting a high near 53º, residents can expect areas of fog in the first half of the day and again after midnight.

2. At the Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, March 9, the proposed calendar for the 2011-2012 school year was presented for a first reading. You may view it here.  The proposed first day of school is August 31 and the last day is set for June 14. The Board will be voting on the calendar at the on March 23 at its next meeting. The public is invited to attend it at 7:30 p.m. at the Tolland High School Library Media Center. Send your comments to superintendent@tolland.k12.ct.us

Aim for a great start to the day with a few games of at the senior center. Stop by between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

The will meet for playtime in the Family Resource Center preschool room at Birch Grove Primary School, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Tired of the same old exercise routine? Join the “dance party” of . The aerobic class at Star Hill Family Athletic Center is from 10 a.m. to noon. Non-members are welcome for $8 per session.

Families that play together…sure have lots of fun. At Birch Grove, takes place from 10:45 a.m.-11:45 a.m. Children, from babies on up, can play together while adults socialize.

at Birch Grove Primary School officially begins Monday, March 14. Students can get a taste of what’s ahead today during classroom visits today. 

It is also Hawaiian Shirt Friday at the high school, to ride the wave into the Hawaiian Dance, 7-10 p.m.

4. Speaking of the high school, congrats to the girls' basketball team who won its Class M quarterfinal match-up against Plainfield last night, 57-40. Go Eagles!

5. Today is Johnny Appleseed Day.  In celebration of the man who was a leader in conservation and missionary and so-called “inventor of the modern apple,” what better way to celebrate this day than with a recipe for apple pie? Not to be cliché, but sometimes you don’t want to mess with a classic, so here’s Betty Crocker’s Apple Pie Recipe. If you want to get crazy—and sigh mmm, mmm good—look out for the apple-cranberry pie; I think Johnny Appleseed would approve.
