Today In History

In 1827, New Orleans held its first Mardi Gras.

On this date in 1922, the Supreme Court unanimously declared the 19th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, allowing women the right to vote, constitutional.

“I Will Survive” won the first, and last, Grammy for Best Disco Recording on Feb. 27, 1980.

Recipe of the Day

Today is National Strawberry Day. In honor of someone near and dear to my heart, here is a simple to make, yet very tasty recipe for strawberry pie.

The Academy Awards

Today is also Academy Awards Day. The first movie awards were held over 80 years ago on May 16, 1929 as a private dinner party with fewer than 250 guests, who paid just $5 to attend. Far different from the extravagant ceremony of today, it only lasted 15 minutes. During WWII, the statues were made out of plaster that could be traded for gold once the war was over.

Walt Disney holds the record for the most wins and nominations for the Academy awards. He was nominated 60 times and won 22 awards.

Anne Hathaway and James Franco will be hosting tonight’s 83rd Academy Awards. You can see the show at 8 p.m. on ABC.
