Public Safety Officials Sending Out Warning About Fake Explorers Campaign

They said no telemarketing company has been hired to raise funds.

Tolland Public Safety officials are sending a warning to residents that a telemarketing campaign purporting to be for the local Explorers posts has not been endorsed by any municipal entity.

"Tolland Public Safety has learned that residents are being solicited for donations for the Fire and Police Explorer Posts. This is not legitimate," officials said on Tuesday night.

Assistant Public Safety Director Douglas Racicot said he received four inquiries from residents about the telemarking campaign on Tuesday.

Racicot said a Hartford exchange - 860-924-3691 - will show up on caller ID readouts. Those answering a call from that number will be greeted with a proclamation that funds are being raised for Explorers posts in Tolland, Vernon and Ellington.

He said no telemarketing firm has been hired for the Tolland posts.

Racicot said residents can ignore the calls or report them to local authorities.
He said state police have been notified of the telemarking calls.
