Read Across America, Lay Some Tiles or Cut a Rug

Today is National Read Across America Day. Look for Tolland Patch's Picks to celebrate. It's the first day of CMT Testing at TIS. There's a full day of activity at the senior center, as well as song and dance in nearby towns at night.

Today is National Read Across America Day. Each child across the country is invited to celebrate the gift of reading today, the birthday of beloved children's author, Dr. Seuss. We give our Patch Picks for Oh, the Places You'll Want to Go on Read Across America Day.

One of those places is the Tolland Public Library, of course. Today it hosts a , 10:15 a.m.-11 a.m. Children's Librarian Mrs. B invites children aged two to three-and-a-half, as well as a parent or caregiver, to listen to stories appropriate for the toddler audience read aloud.

Today is also the first official day of the CMT tests at Tolland Intermediate School. Children will be tested on Degrees of Reading Power (DRP), starting at 9:15 a.m. The test will take a total of 70 minutes.

It’s another packed day at the senior center. Men can enjoy from 9:30 am to 11:30 am. Folks can participate in at 11 a.m. Stop for a meal at noon at the . At 1 p.m., you can choose your lady luck, whether you play a hand or two of or lay some tiles in .

There's a  (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting of Children under Six) workshop for parents looking for ways to set boundaries, give choices and following through with their children. The workshop is at Birch Grove Primary School's Family Resource Center, 6 p.m.-8 p.m. 

For those who like to cut a rug, there’s at this evening. The beginner’s class takes to the floor at 6 p.m., while intermediate skill dancing begins at 7:20 p.m.

Local musicians can head over to  in Manchester at 9 p.m. to perform a few tunes for a friendly audience. The is quite popular, so come early to sign up.
