The stone tablet is not exactly a dispatch from above, but regarding the new athletic complex at Tolland High School, it could be a discovery worthy of Indiana Jones.
The lost sign has been recovered.
A picture of a stone sign mysteriously appeared on the Tolland Works Facebook page over the past few days. It was a gift from the Class of 2002 and says "Tolland High School … Home of the Eagles."
Under the mascot logo is the word "eyrie," a zoological term referring to the nest of an eagle.
So where was it and how did it reappear?
Town Manager Steven Werbner said that Public Works Director Clem Langlois Jr. recently found it in a box. No one knows exactly when it was displayed last, but Werbner is estimating that it was in storage at least since the current high school opened in 2006.
Town officials figured it was a good fit for the new field at the THS stadium. Werbner said the artificial turf surface is scheduled to be placed on its base this week. The $1 million project is being paid for by grants, private donations and public money that includes bonding.
