Updated: Trunk-or-Treat at Big Y for Halloween

With wires still down around town, Big Y is allowing residents to celebrate the spooky holiday in the store parking lot.

Updated: Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, 10:50 a.m.

Big Y has confirmed that trunk-or-treat will be set up in the parking lot that is further away from the store and closer to Route 195. It is adjacent to the Sleepy's store, as well.

As a side note, Tolland Patch will be donating its extra candy to the Tolland Fire Department Christmas tour at the end of the event. If you would like to donate your leftover Halloween candy, please drop it off at the Tolland Patch trunk and a delivery will be made this evening.

Original Story:

Could there be a new Tolland Halloween tradition in the works?

For the second year in a row, Tolland residents will be able to gather at the Big Y parking lot to "trunk-or-treat" as the town recovers from storm damage.

The event came to be on the Tolland Patch Facebook page, as readers dicussed whether or not it would be safe to trick-or-treat this Halloween with power outages and hanging wires still affecting the town.

"What a great way to have a safe Halloween that is fun for the kids," one reader said on Facebook. , kids wore their costumes and gathered candy from the trunks of all the participating cars.

Tolland Patch reached out to Big Y following the outpouring of enthusiasm on Facebook, and store managers generously agreed to lend their parking lot for the festive event.

The trunk-or-treat will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Big Y will decide Wednesday morning which portion of the parking lot will be used.

Make sure to wear your spookiest costumes and to stock your trunk with candy!

If you are attending the event, please indicate that in the comments section so Tolland Patch has an idea of how many people will be showing up!

WHOA! Apparently, there are two "A Tolland Resident" accounts. Who KNEW!
Amy Cas October 31, 2012 at 01:52 pm
Thanks for the opportunity for a safe Halloween for those residents still without power! We will be there.
A Tolland Resident October 31, 2012 at 02:07 pm
How much power do you need to go trick or treating? The whole point is to be out when it's dark with a flashlight. Unless you have really little kids and you're in by dark anyway. Lets the kids go trick or treating the right way, running up to peoples houses, not their cars.

This is not a replacement for regular trick-or-treating, A Tolland Resident (not sure which one). Just an option that was put together because there was a lot of support for it on Facebook.
Kristen Shaw October 31, 2012 at 03:32 pm
Will be there! Never get many trick or treats down my long drive way anyway! This will be fun :)
Jennifer Snider Grover October 31, 2012 at 03:45 pm
We'll be there. And to A Tolland Resident, not all of us here live in neighborhoods, so this is a nice alternative. Most years we trick or treat in Windsor at their town event because we don't want to crash someone elses neighborhood. This is a nice opportunity for my kids to trick or treat with their friends.
Another Tolland Resident October 31, 2012 at 04:27 pm
Jayme- Thanks for coordinating the Trunk-or Treat event! Definitely a safer option than letting kids walk around running generators, gas cans and extension cords in people's yards! We will be there tonight!
As for "A Tolland Resident"- I hope you don't have kids, but if you do, I do hope they have a safe trick or treating experience tonight...
A Tolland Resident October 31, 2012 at 04:32 pm
I don't have kids, nor do I live in a sub-division. I don't have power either but, the generator will be humming! Any kids that want to come to my house, feel free, the house be lit up like a x-mas tree and I'll be handing out full-size candy bars! Not out of the trunk of my car either!
Althea Gill October 31, 2012 at 05:06 pm
I love that there are options! My toddlers will love Trunk or Treat and my older child will go out trick or treating the old fashion way. Thanks for thinking of ALL children!
Jennifer Snider Grover October 31, 2012 at 05:25 pm
I know at least two or three other families will be there, but they might not post here. One is still w/ o power.

Jayme- you've been so helpful. It's great that you've helped facilitate the Big Y trick or treat option. For those who are "in the dark", Big Y is an ideal solution. Individuals and neighborhoods will decide on their own - you haven't twisted any arms - not all ideas work for everyone- so I hope you will take the unnecessary grief lightly! :). Can't make everyone happy!

We will be there to hand out candy. We don't normally get any trick-or-treaters because we are out of the way. This will be a fun time to see all the kids having a good time.

Jayme, a great idea Hurricane or no Hurricane. Could be held next year too, maybe prior to Halloween with prizes for best costume and best decorated car/trunk! We did not attend as we went trick or treating in our neighborhood, but know all must have had a good time. I feel badly for those that felt the need to be so negative toward this idea and have such a nasty attitude. Bah Humbug A Tolland Resident...
Jennifer DiMaso November 1, 2012 at 03:31 am
Well said Allison. We went trick-or-treating in our neighborhood. It was our 1st real Halloween here and couldn't pass up the opportunity to visit everyone on our street. I am sure all who came had a great time. Thank you for organizing. I bet the families with power issues or hard to travel streets appreciated being able to enjoy Halloween safely. Great idea!
Betty-Lou Griffin November 1, 2012 at 05:50 am
We loved seeing you, Jen! As for the rest of Tolland folk, I'm surprised no one mentioned the "Trick-or-Treat at Town Hall" held on October 25. It is sponsored by the Rec. Department, and Tolland Community Women (formerly Tolland Junior Women) contributed 500 bags which Tolland Juniorettes stickered and filled with a few items located by local businesses. The children then took the bags from office to office collecting candy. I sure hope town families participated in this event, which took place prior to the storm. It provides a safe opportunity for Trick-or-Treating.

We went and had a great time! with or without power outages it was a great night! I recommend it being offered every year for those of people that want it.
Allison Harkins November 1, 2012 at 11:39 am
We went trick or treating at the town hall last week, just in case Halloween was a bust again with Sandy on the horizon. Had a great time and kids got to see friends from school. Thank you to all who helped organize that evening as well.

It's society's fault that they trashed the school. That's intelligent!

Stay positive, learn and grow always. And always, always be open to, and pray for, new perspectives.Read More You are obviously engaged, bright and motivated. Always stay that way, but realize you will see many, many things in your life that aren't fair. I have travelled a lot, and been off the beaten track in Peru and many other poor countries. And I myself grew up on welfare. There are so many wonderful things that we have in Tolland and in America. So many, many opportunities and blessings. Never feel persecuted or you will be the one who loses. This has developed into a discussion about life. In a nutshell, what occurred at the school was not right.
