Voters Have Until June 10 to Register for 53rd District Race

The special election is June 11.

Secretary of the State Denise Merrill is reminding adult U.S. citizens residing in the 53rd General Assembly District that they have until Monday, June 10, to register to vote for upcoming special election taking place the following day.

The district covers the towns of Ashford, Willington and most of Tolland. The Democrats have nominated Anthony Horn of Ashford and the Republicans have picked Sam Belsito of Tolland.

Voters in the 53rd district go to the polls on Tuesday June 11 to fill a vacancy in the House district created by the resignation of Democrat Bryan Hurlburt on April 19. Hurlburt resigned to take a position with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Services Bureau.

“Residents of the 53rd district will have a chance next week to elect a new representative to help make key decisions on their behalf in Hartford,” said Merrill, who is Connecticut’s chief elections official. “Eligible voters have until next Monday - June 10th - to register to vote for the special election to fill Representative Hurlburt’s seat, which will take place the following day.

"If you are an eligible voter in Ashford, Tolland, and Willington, I urge you to register now so you can cast a ballot next Tuesday.”

THe Polls will be open from 6:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday June 11, 2013 in the 53rd General Assembly district.  Voters can go to the Secretary of the State’s website www.sots.ct.gov to see if they are registered to vote and where their polling place is located.

In Tolland the special election affects the first two districts. The Hicks Municipal Center Gymnasium and the Senior Center will serve as the respective polling places, according to the Tolland Town Clerk's office.
