What to do in Tolland This Weekend: March 29-31

A regional Good Friday Walk, an egg hunt, story time, a robotics challenge and a sunrise service are just some of the fun things going on this weekend in Tolland and in the area.

1. If you’re up for a long walk, or just want to be part of a larger event this morning (Friday, March 29), the 30th Annual Good Friday Walk will step off at 7:30 from the Rockville United Methodist Church on Grove Street and gradually weave through Vernon, Ellington and East Windsor.

The Good Friday Walk is a 20-mile loop-walk through the three towns to raise money for the Tri-Town Homeless Shelter in Rockville and Sharing, Inc., a non-profit group in Braintree, MA, that has organized Good Friday Walks across the nation since 1972 to fight poverty on a national level.

Here are some more details: Walkers may walk all or a portion or the entire 20-mile route at a minimum pledge of $1 per mile. A free lunch will be provided at the halfway point as well as snacks and beverages at 9 stops along the route and foot massages at Rockville United Methodist Church, which is serving as headquarters for this event. 3. More interested in a little competition this weekend? On March 29th and 30th (today and Saturday) 56 high school teams, including one from THS, will participate in the 30th annual high school robotics challenge at Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford.

Currently, the Tolland High School team meets in East Hartford, but by encouraging people to attend the competition and recruiting more local students to be part of the team the THS group hopes to relocate the team to Tolland next year.

The event is free and suitable for the whole family.

4. This has to mean that spring has finally arrived: American Creamery is now open!

The American Creamery on Merrow Road is open for the season and serving up soft serve and hard ice cream, sundaes, gelato, soft yogurt and more.

5. On Easter Sunday, the Congregational Church on Tolland Green will offer an Easter Sunrise Service for the first time in 73 years.

According to an announcement posted on Tolland Patch, the service “will be a highlight of the Holy Week services at our church and we are delighted to be bringing it back as part of our celebration of Easter, the holiest of our Christian holidays,” Associate Pastor Rev. Judy Medeiros said.

The following is the services schedule for this weekend:

  • Good Friday Worship Service: March 29 at 2:30 p.m.
