Bublé Bubbles Up at Mohegan Sun

Hall & Oates Grace Foxwoods, and Great Deals Statewide at Open House Day

Wherever Michael Bublé appears, romance bubbles up. It’s no coincidence that his fans are nuts for his latest CD, Crazy Love, which has sold more than 7 million copies. The silver-throated, or should we say platinum-throated, Canadian will do two shows, Tuesday and Wednesday, June 14 and 15, at 7:30 p.m. at Mohegan Sun.

His Grammy-winning multi-platinum CD has spawned hit singles “Haven’t Met You Yet,” “Hollywood” and “Hold On.” The Orange County Register says of his on-tour performance, “A performer in peak form. You are witnessing one of the greats.”

Tickets are $85 and $100. For information call 1-888-226-7711 or visit the arena website.

The duo that decorated the '70s, '80s and '90s with hits, is playing at MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods on Friday, June 10, at 8 p.m.

Their “Do What You Want, Be What You Are” Tour features an array of hits, including, “Do It For Love,” “Rich Girl,” Kiss On My List,” “Maneater,” “Private Eyes,” “Sara Smile,” “She’s Gone” and “One On One.” Just thinking about these songs reminds you of their trademark sound, still echoing in the music of today’s young pop stars and even in hip-hop and rap-rock fusion. Hear the original element onstage at Foxwoods on Friday night.

Tickets are $40-65. For information, call 1-800-200-2882 or visit the theater website.

The Whole State Is Having an Open House

This Saturday, June 11, is the day to visit or revisit the best tourism draws in Connecticut, whether you stay in your region or venture beyond. That’s because it’s the 7th Annual Connecticut Open House Day, coordinated by the state Commission on Culture and Tourism.

It means you can visit Lake Compounce Family Theme Park in Bristol after 4 p.m. until its 8 p.m. close for only $10. Or get in touch with feminism and the state heroine, circa 1800s, for free at the Prudence Crandall Museum in Canterbury. Same with the state hero, Nathan Hale, at the family homestead in Coventry, where admission is also free.

But feel free to move about the state. At the Essex Steam Train & Riverboat, children ride for free from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Or depart from Eagle Landing State Park in Haddam on a 45-minute RiverQuest cruise that passes Gillette Castle for only $5 a person. And, speaking of, admission to Gillette Castle State Park over in East Haddam is free all day, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Take a free tour of the Victorian Goodspeed Opera House from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. And top it off with an ice cream at Hillside Sweet Shoppe, also on Main Street, which is offering a buy-one-get-one-free deal to anyone who mentions Open House Day.

Maybe you’ve always wanted to check out the Connecticut Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport. The first 100 visitors on Saturday enter for free. The park opens at 9 a.m.

The New Haven International Festival of Arts & Ideas serves up walking and bike tours, a children’s film festival and a free concert at 7 p.m. by the Silk Road Ensemble, whose artistic director is Yo-Yo Ma. Admission to places like the Yale Center for British Art is free.

Do some time travel, appealing to all ages, and make that visit to the Dinosaur State Park in Rocky Hill. Admission from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. is free.

Or take your race enthusiasts to Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Paul Newman’s home track in the northwestern part of the state. Enjoy a complimentary tour of the track and paddock where all the cars are parked. You can also see them race around the track at the Skip Barber Racing School, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. (The Skip Barber school boasts training Mario Andretti’s son, Michael, and grandson, Marco; Juan Pablo Montoya; Jeff Gordon, and A.J. Allmendinger. Whew.)

Closer to Home

Besides Prudence Crandall and Nathan Hale, there are plenty of Open House riches east of the river.

An historic day in Lebanon offers free admission to Gov. Jonathan Trumbull’s house, war office, his son’s house and the historical society museum. The townwide celebration features costumed guides and shuttle service by antique cars around the Lebanon Green. Pease Brook Farms, 231 Hoxie Road, is open for farm tours, a beekeeping demo and poultry advice from UConn specialist Dr. Darre.

The Old Tolland County Jail and Museum on the green will offer free admission from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Ruthie Shapleigh-Brown of the Connecticut Gravestone Network will be featured at 1 p.m. at a Civil War veterans’ tribute at the East Center Cemetery.

Manchester’s annual Heritage Day features exhibits at the Old Manchester Museum, Manchester History Center, Cheney Homestead and Keeney School House. The CT Fire Museum has a special display on the tragic 1944 Hartford Circus Fire. Participants can “Touch a Truck” at the Lutz Children’s Museum, see the “Rail Road Magic Show” at Mary Cheney Library or participate in an art and architecture treasure hunt and perhaps win a prize. Sites during the 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. celebration will be linked by free trolley transportation.

Other options out east include visiting the Willow Tree Pottery kiln and studio in Ashford, where “pyrographic artist” Gretchen Geromin is a special guest and visitors will receive a handmade amulet. Enjoy wine tasting at Pomfret Spirit Shoppe, a former one-room schoolhouse, from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Or tour Roseland Cottage in Woodstock, with a 2-for-1 admission deal.

For information about numerous other Open House Day events, visit its website.
