Whew! I'm Glad That Didn't Happen (Part 2)

It turns out that writing a 90-second closing statement which represents the entire slate's viewpoints is even harder... especially when there's now power.

As I mentioned in , I was not only responsible for my personal opening statement for the Tolland Junior Women's Meet the Candidates night, but I was also responsbile for delivering the closing statement. The closing statement was to be delivered by board, one per party, so there would be one statement from each party for P&Z. Here's what I was going to say on behalf of Sue Errickson and me, the two Republican candidates for P&Z:

Growth will happen. It happens in children, and it happens in towns, especially a beautiful place like Tolland.

Recently, Tolland went through rapid residential growth. Like a teenager, we ended up with some awkward limbs. We weren’t planning as much as we were reacting. Fortunately, we have new residential regulations and we’re ready for Tolland’s next residential growth spurt.

But we’re only partially prepared for commercial growth. We need businesses, but we also need for the town to maintain its character. Some regulations are in place, but without further work on other regulations, we could end up with a bunch of gangly appendages, all of them in the most prominent parts of town.

The Planning and Zoning Commission is primarily responsible for the face of Tolland. As you travel around Tolland, you’re seeing the work of the P&Z commissioners who volunteer to balance the needs of nature, of developers, of residents--of its citizens.

This responsibility is one which we, Sue Errickson and Bill Eccles, will not undertake lightly.

Fulfilling this responsibility requires more than just promises of conversations with residents--they will happen. So choosing the best candidates for P&Z means looking for people with who are ready to do the work, who know the issues, who know the history. We don’t have time to waste on inexperience. Tolland needs candidates with experience now.

Only two of the P&Z candidates--Bill Eccles and Sue Errickson--together offer you the depth of experience that Tolland needs. This election day, be sure to vote for experience, for us: Sue Errickson and Bill Eccles.

Not too bad, if I may say so myself, especially when you consider that it's 83 seconds long and that an engineer wrote it.

At any rate, if you share the view that Tolland needs experienced and trusted leadership now, then voting for Sue Errickson and Bill Eccles for P&Z is the right thing to do on Tuesday.
