Pottery 101 with Susan Gerr

Birch Mountain Pottery owner Susan Gerr gives a pottery lesson.

She might make it look easy, but owner Susan Gerr knows that a lot of hard work and practice goes into making even the simplest of pottery pieces.

"It engages you; it keeps you coming back, because there's always something new to learn," Gerr said of the craft, adding that she is still an avid learner despite teaching a number of evening classes to local residents.

Gerr opened Birch Mountain Pottery back in 1985 and has been spreading the joy of her craft ever since.

"It's important in this day of technology to work with your hands," she said. "It's satisfying to work with something and then use it yourself. It can be a lifelong craft and hobby."
