Tolland Disc Golf Fans Transform a Pastime into a Business

The Smith family of Tolland has opened Disc Huts, a cottage industry business, selling discs out of their home on Anthony Road.

Greg and Sherri Smith are hoping to share their love for the game of disc golf with their Tolland neighbors. The family has opened a disc store, named Disc Hut, as a small, family-run business run out of their home on Anthony Road.

The couple, who discovered the frisbee/golf hybrid sport several years ago, wanted to help other disc golfers find discs without having to order online or drive hours to the nearest store.

"We found that this was the type of sport where you really have to feel what you're buying," Sherri Smith said. She said that her husband Greg, Disc Hut's owner, wanted to support Tolland's established disc golf community.

While Disc Hut is not affiliated with the disc golf course located at Cross Farms Recreation Center, Smith said, the store is close enough to conveniently serve disc golfers needing new equipment.

Disc Hut carries brands like Innova, Gateway, Discraft and Vibram, as well as accessories like bags and baskets.

Smith said that she hopes the disc golf community will grow in Tolland. Known in the 1970s as "frisbee golf," the sport is more popular in the West and Midwest, according to Smith.

Besides supplying equipment, Smith said that the small, cottage business will eventually move into providing customized discs for special occasions like weddings.

Disc golf fans can find more information on Disc Hut by calling 860-870-7744 or by visiting the business' site. Disc Hut also has a Facebook page.

Disc Hut is located at 45 Anthony Road.
