Obituary: David White

White served as the president of the Tolland Historical Society.

Tolland resident David White, 74, passed away on Monday, April 16, according to the Hartford Courant

White served as the president of the Tolland Historical Society, which was one facet of a life dedicated to preserving history.

"Dave White brought the perspective of a researcher and lover of history to the historical society and our board of directors," said historical society member Kathy Bach. "Both qualities are rare in today's volunteer pool. We have been fortunate to benefit from his expertise and to share his friendship."

White was also a long-time member of the historical society, according to Town Historian Barbara Cook, and spent countless hours researching and copying articles, as well as preparing an index for the society.

In addition to his efforts in Tolland, White also worked at the State Historical Commission, took on the role of museum director at the State Library and advised museums like the Prudence Crandall House, the Whitfield House, Newgate Prison, and the Sloan Stanley Museum, according to the Courant

White also published a book, Connecticut's Black Soldiers 1775-1783, the Courant reports. 

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Lorraine (Wilt) White, as well as his children, Rev. Kristin White and Andrew White, and his brother, Rev. Dr. Thomas White, according to the Courant.

A service will be held on Saturday, April 28 at 11 a.m. at the Rockville United Methodist Church, 142 Grove Street in Rockville. The Courant reports that donations can be made the Rockville United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
