School Board to Wait on Budget Adjustments

The Board of Education dismissed rumors concerning possible program cuts at the middle school at Wednesday night's meeting.

The Board of Education confirmed that no definitive budget cuts or adjustments have been made as of Wednesday night's regularly scheduled board meeting.

The school board responded to concerns from residents, who stated that they had heard reports that certain programs, such as sixth-grade teams, may be cut in order to bridge the gap between the approved by the school board, and t, which would require more than $500,000 in budget cuts.

"My job is to try to make sure that this all works without impacting programs, without impacting personnel. It's very difficult," said Superintendent William Guzman, who added that everything is currently being examined as the district looks to meet its budget. Guzman and school board members said that all facets of the school programs are on the table as the budget adjustment process continues, and that there is no official emphasis on eliminating the sixth-grade team program.

Guzman said that his recommended budget adjustments will be presented to the board and posted online a week before the board's June 27 meeting, which will finalize the district's 2012-2013 fiscal year budget.

The board also appointed chairperson Andy Powell as the co-chair of the town's new Technology Task Force, at Wednesday's meeting.
