What Could Tolland Schools Do With an Extra $100,000?

Patch readers weighed in on how they would spend the winnings of Patch's Deck the House contest if Tolland comes out on top on Dec. 28.

Tolland schools could be getting a late holiday gift of $100,000 if Tolland's Deck the House entry receives the highest number of votes nationwide by Dec. 28.

Right now, Tolland residents can cast a single vote every single day on Patch's Deck the House finalists page.

And while it may be a bit early to write any checks, Tolland Patch readers have some definite ideas on how the money could be spent.

"I would like to see it spent on adding teachers to teach more AP and UConn courses at the high school," reader Kate Farrish said on Facebook. "Let's have high expectations for Tolland High students and more challenging courses for them."

A number of readers also called for increased security at the school, including the placement of police officers at the schools. Several commenters also wanted the $100,000 to fund athletic fees at Tolland schools, which have been a divisive issue in the past.

Other suggestions included:

  • Purchasing computers/iPads for students
  • Buying books
  • Donating a portion to Newtown students
  • Improving Tolland special education so fewer students are placed in outside programs
  • A turf field
  • Teacher bonuses

Ultimately, the school board would decide how the extra funds would be allocated.
