What Could Tolland Schools Do With an Extra $100,000?

Patch readers weighed in on how they would spend the winnings of Patch's Deck the House contest if Tolland comes out on top on Dec. 28.

Tolland schools could be getting a late holiday gift of $100,000 if Tolland's Deck the House entry receives the highest number of votes nationwide by Dec. 28.

Right now, Tolland residents can cast a single vote every single day on Patch's Deck the House finalists page.

And while it may be a bit early to write any checks, Tolland Patch readers have some definite ideas on how the money could be spent.

"I would like to see it spent on adding teachers to teach more AP and UConn courses at the high school," reader Kate Farrish said on Facebook. "Let's have high expectations for Tolland High students and more challenging courses for them."

A number of readers also called for increased security at the school, including the placement of police officers at the schools. Several commenters also wanted the $100,000 to fund athletic fees at Tolland schools, which have been a divisive issue in the past.

Other suggestions included:

  • Purchasing computers/iPads for students
  • Buying books
  • Donating a portion to Newtown students
  • Improving Tolland special education so fewer students are placed in outside programs
  • A turf field
  • Teacher bonuses

Ultimately, the school board would decide how the extra funds would be allocated.

Remember to vote for the Tolland Deck the House entry every day through December 28!

Well said Kate! There are lots of really bright kids in our high school that are BORED because they don't have more challenging courses...bring it on!!!

The money should be put into a fund that can be used as scholarship money. The money could then help many and last for years instead of some dumb thing like sports or teacher bonuses.

One more thing... Nancy M should get a piece of the action since its her house and she did the decorating and submitted the photo for the benefit of Tolland.

Kate, I agree! More challenging courses, as well as more clubs for those interested in science and math would be great! A portion for scholarships would be wonderful as well.

The money should be banked in an interest bearing account and not spent right away. The interest could then be used for school upgrades rather than increasing taxes in Tolland, which are already much too high. Let's start thinking conserve, rather than spend, spend, spend.

How about putting into the general fund of the town and giving the tax payers a break!

With bank rates being so low the town could improve its cash flow more by paying off bonds and saving that interest from the budget.
