Field is the Top Vote-Getter, But GOP Taking Majority to First Council Meeting

A special meeting has been posted for Tuesday.

Richard Field had mixed emotions going into Wednesday's swearing-in ceremony at the Hicks Municipal Center.

He was the top vote-getter, but his democrats are faced with a 3-4  minority to the Republicans on the Town Council.

"I guess I should be happy I was the highest vote-getter by a wide margin," he said with a chuckle. "I guess there are a few people who like me."

But …

But ...

"But we do not have the majority on the council," he said.

Democrat Jan Rubino was second in terms of garnering votes.

The third council veteran leading the pack was Republican Jack Scavone, who served as chairman for the past term. Scavone could not be reached for his assessment on Wednesday. It is the same 4-3 majority the GOP had during the past term.

Field said his main goal to is get the public more involved in the budgeting process - in terms of input.

"If the majority asks the town manager for a 1 percent budget (increase) and he delivers it, but the people want a chance to vote on a budget with increased services, we should give them a chance to vote on that as a referendum," Field said.

Here are the top seven vote-getters:

D Rick Field - 1,743
D Jan Rubino - 1,584
R Jack Scavone - 1,559R
George Baker - 1,483R
William Eccles - 1,461R
Ben Stanford - 1,455D
Paul Krasusky - 1,416

A special organizational council meeting has been called for Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Hicks Municipal Center.
