Recently, I had the opportunity to spend six weeks at the University of Canterbury which offers American students a great opportunity to spend a semester or year abroad in a spectacular natural environment. You can take courses ranging from Antarctic or Maori Studies, to music, geography, or forest and natural resources engineering.
In your spare time you may want to go hiking, stay with a farm family, go jet boating, or climb a glacier. A linguistics and Spanish major from Wake Forest University studying at Canterbury told me “I’ve always wanted to come to New Zealand. What I found is definitely a different culture, but very friendly people and no language barrier. Students find lots to challenge themselves and faculty are very helpful. I live in a nice dorm on campus with three Kiwi roommates!”
