This Needs Reading A.S.A.P.

This is updated, current and correct information about the Tolland Youth Garden's programs, fees, times and dates.

You dear, dear people who read this -- I have been instructed to pass along some information to you as soon as possible.  I believe that some details were misprinted in other places, so we want to make sure you have corrected and updated information.  The descriptions of programs and opportunities are here as well, to remind you of the fun you might have missed out on if you didn't now better.  Yes you CAN get on board the Tolland Garden Paths' Tolland Youth Garden wagon.

And just another quick note -- have you seen the garden lately?  It is looking fabulous, and you really ought to treat yourself to a stroll just to check it out.  Now for the other stuff you need to know....

Junior Youth Garden Stewards Program: A Leadership Training Workshop for Youth 12 to 17

Saturday June 9,  9 a.m.- noon Location: Tolland Recreation Center

Find out what's happening in Tollandwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

A $20.00 fee includes all class materials, training, and a t-shirt.

This leadership training opportunity is for teens, ages 12 to 17, who are interested in gardening and working as a mentor with younger children. We
are looking for teens who can work as part of a team, are dependable, on-time and responsible, and who think they can be a positive role model for children. Teens who complete the workshop will be asked to volunteer for at least three of the weekly one-hour sessions of the 2012 Crandall Summer Camp Youth Gardening Program which runs (TBD)

Teens will learn about:

Working with children in a garden, including training in safety, how to plan and run activities, and other skills needed to be a good Youth Garden Steward.

An introduction to gardening: planting, caring for and harvesting an edible garden, preparing (and eating!) crops, how plants grow and
more.

The Junior Master Gardening Program: Stewards who volunteer for all 8 one-hour sessions of the 2012 Crandall Summer Camp Gardening Program will be eligible for certification as Junior Master Gardeners by the University of CT Tolland County Extension Service.

Pick up an application form at the Tolland Recreation Center (in the former Parker Elementary school -- I went there!) or e-mail Sandie Benjamin at dsbenj43@comcast.net.

Applications must be submitted by JUNE 1.

2) The summer camp program is $10 for 8 weeks ... what a bargain

GROWING A HEALTHY ME: A Youth Gardening Summer Camp Program

Mondays grades k-2 9:00 a.m. -- 10:00 a.m. for the eight weeks of summer camp dates TBD

Mondays grades 3-5 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. for the eight weeks of summer camp

Open to day campers (free with paid camp fee) and non-day campers ($10)

Classes are held in the TGP Youth Garden next to Lions Little League Field

Join us in the Youth Garden at Crandall’s for a hands-on opportunity to explore the joys of gardening. Learn how interesting and helpful
soil can be. Digging in, you may learn about some baffling bugs or invite a worm to lunch. You might enjoy a plant-parts salad and discover the many shades and flavors of lettuce and other plants you help grow.

If you attend all eight sessions, you could be eligible for a Junior Master Gardener Certificate.

3) Adult volunteers (bring a youth with you if you want to, of course) are welcome to work in the garden on Wednesdays 9 - 11 and/or Thursdays 6 - 8. A Team member will be there to supervise. Bring work gloves and, if you have them, favorite tools for weeding and cultivating in the garden. When harvest time comes, volunteers are welcome to take home veggies for dinner.
