Field of Flags at United Congregational Church of Tolland

On October 25th, a Field of Flags was placed on the lawn of the United Congregational Church of Tolland.  For three weeks until November 16th, the display of more than 6,600 flags will serve as a silent, poignant reminder of the cost of war.  Each flag represents an American casualty in the Iraq or Afghanistan war; each represents not only a life given in conflict, but also the family members and friends whose lives have been touched by that life now being gone.  The display represents our respect for those who have served and those who are currently serving in the military along with our hope for peace in the future.

The Field of Flags started in 2005 by the members of the Memorial Garden Committee at the Somers Congregational Church in Connecticut.  They placed 2,231 American flags, one for each American casualty that had occurred due to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.  The flags have since traveled to many churches in Connecticut and other states as far away as Florida.

On Sunday, November 10th at 1:00 PM the United Congregational Church will hold a Field of Flags Ceremony to honor all veterans.  Please join us for this patriotic tribute to those who have served and for those who are serving our country.  Parking will be available at the church to attend this service or to witness the beautiful and touching display of flags between now and November 16th.
