It's Time for a Bigger Library

On Nov. 5, we have a chance to improve Tolland in a way that was last done thirty years ago. That’s the last time residents were given the opportunity to vote for a larger library, and they voted in favor.

Since then, the population of Tolland has grown by 50%, Internet access has become a necessity, and the demand for materials and community space is stronger than ever. Today, Tolland Public Library is significantly smaller per capita than facilities in surrounding towns.

The Hicks Gymnasium, which abuts the library, recently became vacant after the Parks and Recreation Department moved out. Annexing the gym to the current library will increase the total square footage by 43%; and build on renovations already completed, such as the new geothermal heating/cooling system, roof and circulation desk.

Other projects that Tolland voters have approved in the past few years will be paid off by the time construction begins, and it’s possible that much of the cost can be covered by grants.

The expansion of Tolland Public Library will be a win-win situation for all Tolland residents, old and young, rich and poor. It was a good idea 30 years ago, and it’s a good idea today.
