Campus Fire-Safety Month

With students headed back to college this month, we felt it important to stress the importance of Fire-Safety Month.  College is a new experience in your student’s life.  We want to make sure they enjoy their college experience as well as be safe.

September is nationally recognized as National Campus Fire Safety Month. Since the program started in 2005, 204 proclamations have been signed by the nation’s governors as well as resolutions in the U.S. Congress. A list of the states is available at www.campus-firewatch.com.

Common Factors

According to information compiled by Campus Firewatch, 86 percent of the campus-related fire fatalities across the nation since January 2000 have occurred in off-campus housing. Five common factors in a number of these fires include:

• Lack of automatic fire sprinklers
• Missing or disabled smoke alarms
• Careless disposal of smoking materials
• Impaired judgment from alcohol consumption
• Fires originating on upholstered furniture on decks or porches

Here are some tips for campus fire-safety

• Always know 2 ways out, wherever you are.
• Smoke alarms  save lives.  For the price of a pizza you can save a life, maybe yours. Get one today!
• Live in housing with fire sprinklers. Sprinklers save lives.
• Cooking and drinking is as dangerous as driving while drinking. Learn more about cooking fire safety.
• No pizza box on top of stove, will burn if accidentally turned on. Fire spreads fast
• Smoke alarms can save your life only if they are working. Don’t take out batteries, don’t take them down
• When the alarm sounds, get out.  You never know when it’s real
• Most common killer in fires is smoke, spreading far.
• Don’t overload outlets & extension cords, they can overheat & start a fire.
