Buy Your Christmas Tree and Support Tolland Fire Explorers

Tolland Fire Explorer Post 40 is fundraising through its first-annual Christmas tree sale.

Tolland Fire Explorer Post 40 is hoping to begin a new holiday tradition with the start of its first-annual Christmas tree sale.

Post leaders Capt. John Kosciw and Medical Lt. Amy Bassett said that an explorer's parent came up with the fundraising idea.

The explorer post teaches young Tolland residents about the lives of first responders. They are first aid and CPR-certified, and the more experienced members accompany first responders on calls, while being closely supervised.

The explorer post also receives some fire training; the young members recently completed an exercise in a maze at Parker Memorial School that is also used by Tolland Fire Department members.

"They're not the same people who came here in the fall," Kosciw said of how the new explorers have grown since joining the post.

"You get a unique satisfaction that you did something to help," added Explorer Nik Bassett, who has assisted first responders on emergency calls.

The funds from the Christmas tree sale will help the post pay for certification fees, study materials and first responder gear.
