Original Story

An automobile crash on Interstate-84 on Tuesday morning closed all westbound lanes between exits 68 and 67 just as the morning commute was getting under way.

Tolland Public Safety Director John Littell classified the accident as fatal.

The crash took place just after 7 a.m. First-responders were positioned in the center and left-hand lanes as they scrambled to work at the scene.

Vehicles were being diverted off the exit 68 ramp and onto Merrow Road.
Traffic was backed up from the scene into Vernon on Route 30.

At 8:49 a.m., Assistant Pubic Safety Director Douglas Racicot estimated it would be three to four hours before the road could be opened.

State police were at the scene investigating as the Tolland fire and ambulance crews worked on the crash.
