The mission of the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is to provide "a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposal, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of these medications," according to the DEA.

Last year's efforts by the DEA and state, local and tribal law enforcement partners, at more than 5,263 locations, collected 488,395 pounds - 244 tons - of prescription medications from members of the public, according to the DEA.
