Firefighters Extinguish Fire at Bill's Auto Parts

The call came in at 12:41 p.m. on Friday.

On Friday afternoon, the Tolland Fire Department responded to a fire at Bill's Auto Parts and quickly extinguished it.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Douglas Racicot, the call from the 844 Merrow Rd. business came in at 12:41 p.m. and because of the career firefighting staff in Tolland, there was a rapid response. He said that the fire was under control in 20 minutes.

Racicot said that an employee of the business was working in a back, detached storage building when a small container of gasoline got knocked over and ignited. He said that the employee quickly notified the front office that there was a fire on site, and the fire department was called.

Mutual aid was received from the Willington Fire Department and the UConn Fire Department.

Racicot said that it was a very minor in the scheme of things and that no firefighters were injured. One person was transported to the hospital for a medical evaluation.

Because of the time of day and location, the bus company had to reroute traffic for the Tolland High School run.

Racicot said that there were some light hazardous materials in the back storage building the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was called in to assist. He said that they just wanted to make sure there was no environmental impact and that if there was, that it was cleaned up in accordance with DEEP guidelines.

He added that they don't envision there to be a problem, but it's a precautionary reason why DEEP was called.
