A Tolland man tried to sneak away from the scene of a motor vehicle crash on Thursday afternoon and, after being questioned by police, was taken into custody on drug charges, according to a Vernon Police Department news release.
At 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, officers were called to the scene of a motor vehicle crash on South Frontage Road, near exit 66 off Interstate-84 in Vernon, police said. Police said a caller complained that one of those involved was trying to evade the scene.
When driving near the scene, an officer noticed that Peter Henry Griffiths, 23, of 109 Dockerel Rd., Tolland, was walking around with vehicle license plates, police said.
Police stopped Griffiths and began questioning him, and a plastic sandwich bag fell when he was trying to remove something from his pocket, police said.
An officer immediately recognized that the substance in the bag resembled heroin, police said. A subsequent search of Griffiths uncovered a hypodermic needle and two small pharmaceutical pills, police said.
He was then taken into custody, police said.
Griffiths was charged with interfering with police, narcotics possession, the sale of a controlled substance and the use of drug paraphernalia. His bond was set at $10,000 and he was assigned a court date of Aug.28, police said.
