Tolland Resident Pleads Guilty to Child Porn Charge

Carl G. Koplin was a family practice physician in Vernon and a Boy Scout leader before being charged in 2010.

Tolland resident Carl Koplin, 55, entered a plea on Wednesday before a federal judge in Hartford to one count of receipt of child pornography, according to a U.S. Attorney District of Connecticut press release.

The release said that Koplin, a former family practice physician in Vernon and Boy Scout leader, was charged after FBI agents used a file sharing program and traced images and videos of child pornography to an IP address at Koplin's home. After seizing his desktop computer and other computer components in July 2010, police found thousands of images and videos of child pornography, amounting to more than 800 gigabytes, the release said.

Koplin also told federal agents searching his home that he used a file sharing program to trade images of child pornography, according to the release.

Koplin is scheduled to be sentenced on December 11, 2012, the release said. There is a minimum mandatory imprisonment of five years and a maximum of 20, as well as a fine of up to $250,000.

The U.S. Probation Office has been electronically monitoring Koplin at his home since he was charged, according to the release.

This is such a pity. 5 years minimum probably not counting the past 2 years he has basically been under house arrest. For what? because he likes to look at underage pictures. No one has said whether these are baby pictures or those of 16 year olds. He was not accused of taking these pictures he was just looking at those that are already out there. No one says he was special ordering pictures. I can kill a stranger and get less time in jail then he will get for looking at pictures. Ridiculous! Please dont attact me as I was a victim myself at an early age but it really didnt steal my childhood. Although I had a great therapist who let me heal instead of beating into my head i was a victim. I feel bad for Dr. Koplin its just such a waste.

Part of me agrees with you that 5 years seems harsh, but at the same time you have to take into account his position as a family physician and boy scout leader. If he's getting pleasure from looking at these images, who's to say hes not getting the same feelings when he's giving a child a physical?

You obviously are missing the bigger picture. What you fail to get is that the good old doctor compiled images and made them available to others to view over the internet. This guy deserves every day of 5 years! I have no sympathy for anyone viewing child porn.

For one thing, these photos are not just "out there" - while porn of almost every adult kind can be found easily, child pornography is much more diligently pursued by the authorities. For him to collect a whopping 800 gigabytes of material (about three times as much storage as most people's hard drives hold), he had to be connected to other "fans" who shared the material - and all of these participants are supporting whoever is taking the photos and videos in the first place. There's no free ride here, and no excuse.

That's right he may not have been producing the images but he still shared them with others I'm sure.

Emily, how dare you defend this action? "because he likes to look at underage pictures..." It was not babies or chilren under two the case states... It is the case of preversion. Period. He took an oath not only as a physician but as a scout leader to uphold dignity ... at least, there is nothing dignified about a grown man getting off downloadin, not to mention UPLOADING videos and pictures. Hopefully it wasn't your child.

Ugh! This case just brings to light yet again that child pornography (and abuse) is everywhere, all the time, in your town, in our town and used and traded and supported by the seemingly best of us, including the people we are supposed to trust with our children...doctors, coaches, teachers, etc. There is no excuse! Thank you to the people who try to stop it! My heart goes out to his family.

In any event, there are always innocent bystanders who are drawn in and affected, in this case his family. This is a personal tragedy for all concerned and there is a price that will be paid by the innocents as well as the wrong doer. I hope that as a family they can provide each other the support needed. This is a fine family of long standing in this town which, in spite of this wrong, deserves compassion and support.

Let's not forget these aren't animated pictures these are real children being sexually abused. Emily you're a little twisted if you think it's just about looking at pictures

Im sorry but are you retarded or otherwise brain damaged? Looking at pictures of underage girls is inapropriate, creepy, pedophilic and inexcusable. Period. I think more disgusting men who do this should get the same thing thrown at them. Its really about time society stopped accepting this behavior as anywhere near ok or normal. Hes a grown man, those are kids. WTF is wrong with you?!

well said.

This is so true. Dr. Koplin has a lovely family. His wife is a wonderful person and his sons are bright and talented. Such a painful thing to see!
