A Slow Start at the Tolland Polls on Election Day

Candidates are out greeting residents during the slow election morning.

Update: As of 2 p.m., 1,183 people or 12.81 percent of registered voters placed their votes at the polls.

Original Story:

Election day is off to a slow start this Tuesday, with only 5.5 percent of voters, or 507 people, showing up to vote as of quarter past 10 a.m., according to Democratic Registrar of Voters Michael Wyman.

Wyman said that he suspected the recent power outages are influencing the low voter turn out. According to Wyman, Tolland's lowest municipal election turnout was 16.9 percent in 2009.

Public Works employee Scott Howe, who helped paint lines onto what's left of the town hall's gravel parking lot due to construction, has been guiding voters in and out of the polling station this morning.

"It's really light," Howe said of the trickle of voters heading in and out of the polling place.

Construction and power outages haven't stopped the candidates from greeting voters, however. They've been gathering at both the senior center and Hicks Memorial, surrounded by signs from both parties.

The polls will be open until 8 p.m. Tuesday night.
