Althea Gill Resigns from Board of Education

Gill left the board due to family commitments.

Althea Gill (R) has resigned from Tolland's school board due to family commitments.

"I wish there was a way I could stay longer," she said, adding that husband Mark Gill's position on town council has also contributed to scheduling difficulties and time constraints.

"I know the group I'm leaving will carry on and be very successful," she said of her peers on the board. "They care about every individual in the community, and they are the voice for the children. That's what I'll miss the most."

She said that she may run for office again in the future, when her family's schedule is more open.

School board chairperson Andy Powell said that the board will miss Gill's enthusiasm and teaching experience.

Gill has a master's degree in K-8 education.

The former middle school teacher was elected to the board in November 2011.

Powell said that the Republican Town Committee has 60 days to name a replacement, who then has to be approved by the town council.
