Chris Dodd Questions Need For Assault Weapons in Wake of Denver Shootings

The former senator, now head of the Motion Picture Association of America, was stumping for a candidate in Windsor on Monday and said the U.S. needs greater gun controls.

Former U.S. Senator Christopher J. Dodd said Monday he supports restrictions on some types of guns, particularly assault weapons, in the wake of the Denver shootings last week.

Dodd, a Democrat, was in Windsor stumping for a local democratic candidate. He questioned why anyone would need an assault rifle ---  one of the weapons the accused gunman used in Friday's rampage in Colorado that killed 12 and injured 58 --- and said even hunters can't make a good argument in support of the sale of assault weapon, according to the blog Capitol Watch.

“People have Second Amendment rights, in a sense," the blog quotes the former senator. "I respect that and support that. But, like all rights, there needs to be limitations. The right to free speech is not unlimited. You can’t scream fire in a crowded theater, as the saying goes. The right to bear arms ought not to be an unlimited right."

His comments come at a time when some are debating the role that accessibility to guns and violence in movies may have played in the shooting attack that took place during a screen of the Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises."

Dodd, who has a home on the Connecticut River in East Haddam, was a longtime and powerful member of the U.S. Senate who opted not to seek re-election in 2010. He also made a brief run for president.

"The right to bear arms ought not to be an unlimited right." “People have Second Amendment rights, in a sense," Its amazing what will come out of peoples mouths when they are trying to raise money for pollitics. In case you dont already know the right to own guns is already not an unlimited right. There are already many restrictions and regulations in place. He should go back to Hollywood we do not need his liberal ideas here in CT or even in Washington DC. He should go back and see if he can put some restrictions on the unlimited violence in movies today because the violence in movies has about as much to do with this masscre as the "legal" right to own firearms. (nothing) The right to legally own guns really had nothing to do with this. Have you seen this guy who killed all these people on the news? He looks to have serious issues. I bet even if "all" guns in the US were illegal this guy would have found weapons some wheres and still caused this. Even convicted felons still find ways to get guns to commit more crimes and there are laws already saying they have no "legal" rights to own guns. Because of this very sad time in our history, because this guy massacred these people all the "anti gun nuts" will pour out of the wood work now and try to capitalize on the misery this person caused in colorado. The liberals are slowly ruining our country. If you outlaw all guns, criminals will still have guns but law abiding citizens will have no way to protect themselves.

..... and liberals would say conservatives are ruining the country.... the back and forth arguing with no legislation getting done regarding anything will continue until we all sit down and sing kumbaya together... Washington was right about not wanting political parties. If anyone has a suggested time and place for the kumbaya meeting, count me in... in the mean time, I'll be out hunting dear with an uzi.

Who cares what Chris Dodd thinks. He's a liar, a crook, and a political has been! The only reason he didn't run for re-election is that he knew he wouldn't win. Heck, even the CT liberals had him figured out after the Countrywide scandal!
Don Shepherd July 25, 2012 at 02:03 PM
As for the legal purchase of firearms...he had the right to buy them, but he had no right to use them as he did... but you idiots who argue for more control seem to miss the fact that he also had ILLEGAL grenades, and a host of illegal chemicals... had he opted to solely use the grenades he would have inflicted much more damage. He could have used a legally purchased vehicle and loaded it with legal gasoline or chemical fertilizers. Most of all you miss the point that he is a criminal. He is deranged. He had no regard for law or human life. Stop focusing on the the tools of destruction and focus on the real problem...the intent to do harm.

Comment from another article. "If you Outlaw guns then only Outlaws will have guns" and the "Law Abiding Citizens" of this country will have no way to defend themselves against low life criminals. It is really a shame that these polititions as soon as there is a tragety such as this, they jump on their band wagons looking to gather votes by saying they need to tighten and make stricter laws governing gun ownership rights in the name of protecting the public. Gun control probably would not have stopped this horrendous massacre, because criminals and "nut jobs" will always find ways to get guns and weapons even if they are all made illegal. The only thing that gun control laws do is make it harder for "non" criminals to defend themselves. Have you seen this guy that did this massacre on the news? From the look in his eyes I doubt that any stricter gun laws, proposed by these "liberal blow hards" would have stopped him from causing this carnage. Its time these political fools realized they need to enforce the laws they already have in place and stop trying to gather votes by trying to take away our rights as law abiding citizens to own guns. These people want to take away your right to own guns because they say they want to deter crimes commited with guns but on the other hand they abolish the death penalty in CT. What a bunch of fools.

Why didn't Mr. Dodd propose the elimination of all Violence as promoted in the Motion Picture Industry. I wonder why. Honestly if the progressive/ liberal faction in this country had not spent the last 40 years attempting to elminate all guns from private citizens at every level, i believe there would be more support for reducing certain kinds of assault rifles. I am concerned that at somepoint given the way this country going many of us may wish that we had an assault rifle or 2 just to protect our private property.

Please stop talking about Mr. Dodd...we don't care what he says.

Patch's liberal leaning is right out for all to see in this one. To actually go to a Courant blog to quote a disgraced former US senator on his opinion on gun control ? Mr Dodd's opinion is no more relevant than any one elses, yet he gets an article and pictures. under the topic "elections"? Oh, and we all know what led up to his " opting not to seek re-election". Patch is losing credibility as a news source with people I talk with and posting meaningless articles like this is a big part of it. This is really an attempt to promote Dodd and his political colleagues, not to inform us of anything.

Folks remember, there is more than just two sides to the story. America is not just a LEFT-RIGHT country. Stop allowing the media, politicians, people who comment on patch and others to force everyone into this left-right paradigm. Just because you don't support Dodd or Obama or gun control doesn't mean you are GOP or are right wing. The left & the right want to fit everyone in one of these two slots because it limits debate. It's dishonest and manipulative. Dodd automatically using this Joker incident to promote total gun control is a dastardly scheme of the lowest order and shows that politicians like him are parasitic and opportunistic leeches who prey on the hysteria and divisiveness of incidents like this to silence their critics. And it seems that Patch is right there along with them, to further the statist-collectivist big government and anti-liberty agenda.

When there are massacres like this happening, why are we "betting" what he could have done, when we could be enforcing stricter gun control. James Homes bought all of his weapons legally. We should not be letting this happen. We do have Second Amendment rights, but does that make those rights moral?
charles August 01, 2012 at 05:51 PM
Hmmm...Spiff, what about your friend Mitt Romney? He is a liar, crook, and political has-been. Mitt Romney didn't run for re-election as governor in Massachusetts because he knew he couldn't win. I guess that MA Republicans had him figured out, since they nominated the lieutenant governor as their candidate.
Spiff August 01, 2012 at 05:57 PM
Hey Chuck, not talking about anyone but Chris Dodd at the moment. But aren't your diversionary attempts cute! Typical of your type, since you can't address the issue directly, you have to quickly divert to another topic.
charles August 01, 2012 at 06:06 PM
Then let's talk about Chris Dodd. He has a right of free speech, and I agree with him. I should not be able to worry about people having assault weapons around me. I did nothing wrong, just like Trayvon Martin! But George Zimmerman killed him anyway, and is pleading NOT GUILTY! But remember, you have to do research about who you support, before you say something hypocritical to your beliefs about another person.
Spiff August 01, 2012 at 06:35 PM
More diversion with the Trayvon thing, Chuck. My original comment was about Chris Dodd being a liar and a crook. Care to comment on that?
charles August 01, 2012 at 06:40 PM
I would care to comment on Chris Dodd and his opinion set forht in this article. I agree with it, but as a supporter of Mitt Romney, you have to explain why, and saying that someone else is a liar and a crook, while Mitt Romney is one himself, that raises a question. If you don't care what Chris Dodd thinks, because of that, you don't care what Mitt Romney thinks either, and don't want him in the White House, which is pretty good with me.
Spiff August 01, 2012 at 06:58 PM
That's fine Chuck, you can agree with Chris Dodd on anything you want. If you care about his opinion, it tells me something about you. As I said in my original comment, I don't care what Chris Dodd thinks about anything. His opinion is irrelevant! He is a confirmed liar and crook. Doesn't matter what he thinks. I never said I was a supporter of anyone, either, just that I didn't care what Chris Dodd thinks. As for trying to suck me into a debate about another topic, ain't gonna happen.

"We need a proven leader (not a community organizer) that has successfully run an organization, balanced a budget, and can make the tough decisions for the country as a whole, not just a select group within his political party. Obama has proven that he is not up to the task of any of these. It's time to give someone else a chance, anyone, and it looks like Mitt Romney is the person best positioned to send Obama back to Chicago! Anyone But Obama (ABO) 2012", "I'd rather have a Mormon as my President than a scumbag!", "Mitt Romney now will have a much easier time defeating Barack Obama!!!", "if Romney is elected and we have a majority in the house and Senate, Obamacare will absolutely be repealed. This law absolutely changes how the Federal government views it's "subjects" and everyone who recognizes that will NEVER let it stand.", "President - Mitt Romney", "Mitt Romney's strengths are far greater than Barack Obama's, especially when it comes to issues like the economy. We need to lower taxes (for everyone), decrease government spending, and create a business friendly political environment to help get this economic recovery back on track! Barack Obama has proven that he is not up to the task of accomplishing any of these objectives! It is time to give someone else a chance.", "Who would I like to see as Mitt's running mate? The person who provides Mitt with the greatest opportunity to win in November, whomever that might be. I'm for ABO (Anyone But Obama)!" Don't deny it.

Dude, that was from another thread, actually several. We were focused on this thread, or at least I was (guess you weren't though).

(Oops, accidentally hit submit) Dude, that was from another thread, actually several. We were focused on this thread, or at least I was (guess you weren't though). OK, you sucked me in Chuck, what do you want to talk about?
carl slicer August 10, 2012 at 02:53 PM
Yes Charles: Mr Dodd is entitled to free speech & free movement. That's why he pulled a "Sam Gjedenson" and moved out of Conn, when he was a Connecticut Senator, for 2 years & lived to Iowa. Talk about taking advantage of his Democrat friends. Then thru Freedom of Speech Senator Dodd & Congressman Frank authored the "Dodd-Frank" bill which passed July 2010. The "DF Bill" was designed to protect the consumer from the Big Bad bankers on Wall Street. However it never protected the consumers from reckless abuse of FANNIE MAE & FREDDIE MAC. And then dont forget how how Mr. Dodd didn't recieve insider influenced consideration on new mortgages from CountryWide. Charles: Keep backing those Democrat friends that take could care of you. Carl.

Why in hell is a Candidate from Windsor, having Chris Dodd "stumping" for them? Good thing they didn't mention the Candidates Name in the above article! Just the association with Chis Dodd puts that candidate at the wrong side of voters!!
