Election 2012: Tolland Results

State Rep. Bryan Hurlburt wins Tolland and keeps seat; State Senator Tony Guglielmo sweeps Susan Eastwood in town; and Tolland passes a referendum approving $5 million in bonding for road improvements.

35th State Senate District

Longtime state senator Tony Guglielmo defeated Democrat Susan Eastwood.

The 35th District Republican campaigned on common sense budgeting.

"I think we did well," Guglielmo said. "I appreciate everyone who came out to vote and I know we could not have done it without both Republican and Democratic support."

Guglielmo insisted the first order of business would be to address the state budget.

Vincent said that she learned a lot from her first run at the state level and that she hopes to run again two years down the road.

"We achieved a tremendous amount of momentum in Ashford and Willington," she said. "I certainly want to keep going. This was the first bite of the apple."

Hurlburt thanked Vincent and voters for an upbeat campaign.

"We ran a positive campaign that relied on grassroots support from many local volunteers who gave up their time to help out," he said.  "I cannot thank them enough and the overwhelming result is a great example of what people can do when they are united by a positive theme and vision. I look forward to working with Christine to make sure we can continue to move our state and communities forward."

8th State Assembly District

Incumbent Tim Ackert (R) kept the 8th District title and garnered 374 votes in Tolland, while challenger John Murphy (D) took 328.

The 8th District also includes Coventry, Columbia and part of Vernon.

Ackert said that taxes will be the first issue he tackles as he starts a new term in office.

"Connecticut is obviously one of the highest taxed states for individuals and for businesses, and it's a key issue for people leaving this state. We've got to find a solution that's going to be a good balance," he said.

A small portion of Tolland became a part of this district after the assembly district lines were redrawn by the Reapportionment Commission in 2011.

Referendum on Roads

Tolland voters also overwhelmingly supported a referendum to bond $5 million for road improvements. A list of the roads that will be fixed with those funds is available on Tolland Patch.

Registrars of Voters

Residents also voted for the Registrar of Voters position on Tuesday. Democratic registrar Michael Wyman received 4,053 votes and Republican registrar Ken Houck received 3,363, ensuring re-election for both candidates to their positions.

Numbers are unofficial and will be updated throughout the night as they come in.
