Other facts

John Murphy has lived in Coventry for 30 years and is a third generation union electrician, labor organizer, and a progressive political activist. He will be a steadfast advocate for the people of the 8th General Assembly District. For the last eleven years, John is the Organizing Director of Connecticut Citizen Action Group (CCAG), a progressive advocacy group focusing on open government, clean elections, health care reform, fair taxation and the environment. Within the state, John and CCAG worked hard on behalf of publicly funded elections, open primaries, health care reform and environmental issues; on the national scene, CCAG has supported health care reform and opposed Social Security privatization. John has worked on a variety of local issues campaigns, including working with Smart Growth for Vernon to stop Wal Mart from building at I-84 Exit 67, which would threaten the headwaters of the Tankerhoosen River. In addition to his work with CCAG, John serves as Assistant Business Manager and Organizer for the IBEW Local 1228, which represents photographers, technicians, engineers, and on-air personalities in the television industry in five New England states. Raised in nearby Manchester, John attended East Catholic High School; after high school, he moved to Vernon and began working in Tolland at Burroughs Corporation (now known as Standard Register). In 1973, John began a four year apprenticeship with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and indentured to the State of Connecticut to become an electrician, following in the footsteps of his father John and grandfather Patrick. John worked in the electrical field as an electrician, foreman and general foreman until 1995. John received an Associate’s degree in Labor Studies through the University of Connecticut’s Labor Education Center from Greater Hartford Community College in 1989, and followed that with a BA in Labor Studies through the George Meany Center for Labor Studies from Antioch University (now the National Labor College). John will be taking a leave of absence from CCAG so he can devote his full energies to meeting voters in person and talking with you about your concerns. Compassionate, knowledgeable, and smart, John will be a strong, consistent fighter for the people of the 8th Assembly District. Through his work with CCAG and organized labor, John has developed a network of relationships with key Connecticut opinion leaders. He’ll not only give the 8th Assembly District a new voice in Hartford, John will make sure our voice is heard.
