Library Issue on Tuesday Council Agenda

A resolution is slated for discussion.

The Town Council is slated to discuss a bonding resolution for a proposed $2.6 million project to expand the Tolland Public Library into the adjacent gymnasium at the Hicks Municipal Center on Tuesday.

The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Hicks Municipal Center.

The resolution is listed under new business and the agenda item is worded as follows:

Consideration of a resolution authorizing an appropriation of $2,600,000 for the expansion of the Tolland Public Library and the financing of said appropriation by the issuance of general obligation bonds of the Town and notes in anticipation of such bonds in an amount not to  exceed $2,600,000, or so much as may be necessary after deducting grants therefor, as well as establishing a date for a referendum.

A report by the Library Board, the library foundation and the Friends of the Tolland Library is also on the agenda.

The bonding issue has been a hot topic for two weeks, ever since the council was deadlocked over setting a public hearing date on the issue.

Several residents have indicated they were thinking about speaking at the Tuesday council meeting in favor of putting the bond issue to a vote.

Meanwhile, Tolland resident Steven Jones, the Democratic Town Committee secretary, is trying to get the 462 signatures on a petition that could force the issue onto the November ballot in some form.
