Light Agenda as Current Town Council Holds Its Last Meeting

With the municipal elections of November 8, 2011 just around the corner, the Town Council handled a light agenda and bid farewell to the current chairman.

The Town Council addressed a few minor items in its final meeting as currently constituted. With several candidates for the Town Council also in attendance, the business was wrapped up in short order, and the council bid farewell to departing members.

Patricia Woods, Executive Director of the Tolland Housing Authority provided a report to the Council on the status of low income elderly housing in town. She recommended and the Council approved a payment in lieu of taxes from the Authority of 3% of the revenue from rental units. The payment is reviewed every years, and can amount to as much as 10% of revenue, and must be approved by the Town Council.

Woods reported that the waiting list remained fairly stable at 10 for double occupancy units and 45 for single occupancy. This has remained the same for roughly three years.

The report also contained a review of capital improvements, and a plan for the next year's projects. The Town Council requires a five year capital improvement plan, which Woods said she would provide.

"We have no large projects in the future, thanks to grants and help from Connecticut Light and Power," said Woods.

The Council acknowledged the need for an increase in the availability of affordable elderly housing, and that increasing the stock of units was definitely on the radar.

Departing Chairman Fred Daniels thanked the council for their hard work over the last ten years. Daniels will not be seeking re-election in November.

He did plan to remain involved, "I'll be around," he said, and further joked, "we'll be watching!"

Vice Chairperson Maryann Delaney Tuttle thanked Daniels for his service and praised him for his "approach and demeanor" in handling Town business.

The next scheduled Town Council meeting was to take place on November 8, 2011, but due to the elections, this meeting has been canceled.
