Municipal Officials Question Malloy Budget Cuts

The leaders of the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities suggest the governor has overstepped his budget authority.

Municipal leaders are questioning whether Gov. Dannel P. Malloy had the authority to cut state aid to some municipal programs as part of his plan to head off a nearly $1 billion budget deficit.

James Finley, the executive director of the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities, sent a letter to Malloy’s budget director this week questioning the $4.7 million cut Malloy made in state aid to towns, much of it to schools.

In an interview with the Connecticut Mirror, Finley said the cuts Malloy ordered appear to overstep his budget authority.

Finley told the Mirror that the cuts might violate a legislative measure limiting the governor from cutting municipal aid once that aid is given. However, Malloy’s budget chief, Benjamin Barnes, told the website that the cuts were proper and do not violate such a rule.

The $4.7 million in local funding was part of a larger $123 million “budget mitigation plan” put forth by Malloy’s budget officials that is aimed at reducing what looks to be a more than $1 billion state budget deficit for 2013. The legislature has scheduled a special session this month to try and close the budget gap.

Two part question:
1) Do any of you have buyer's remorse yet for voting for this charlatan? 2) If you voted for Dan Malloy two years ago, do you plan on voting for him again in 2014?
Rob December 11, 2012 at 07:24 pm
I didn't vote for him then and won't vote for him in 2014.

Well, Rob, I certainly hope everyone else feels the same as you!

This is what we all get because he backed the unions. When are the people in this state going to wake up. The democrats want to enslave everyone.

I believe Tom Foley won the election until the next day the Dems came up with the BS from Bridgeport that not enough ballots were given to the city (Susan Bicewicz was incharge). They photo copied the ballots, most likely the ones with Dano's vote!! Can you imagine the uproar if this was a Republican. We reap what we sow but I voted Republican all the way. We need to elimate the state income tax and make CT more like Texas or NC

More like Texas? You've got to be kidding...lowest educated state in the union who think succession is a good idea. You probably think Romney won too, huh?

Coming from the guy (GregoryRobertSamuels) who thinks government created jobs actually contribute to economic growth! Not surprisingly, Greg, the recent economic downturn barely even touched Texas, especially places like the Houston metropolitan area. Sorry buddy, but Dem policies, most notably higher taxes that result in fewer take-home dollars for middle class citizens to pay their bills, hurt economic growth! But if you paid attention, then you'd know this. BTW, it is secession, not succession!

Another regional high school had a tailgate breakfast this morning and it went with out anyRead More problems. (without approval from admins.) Kids are not the problem here. Seems like administrators are the ones looking for problems.

It's society's fault that they trashed the school. That's intelligent!

Stay positive, learn and grow always. And always, always be open to, and pray for, new perspectives.Read More You are obviously engaged, bright and motivated. Always stay that way, but realize you will see many, many things in your life that aren't fair. I have travelled a lot, and been off the beaten track in Peru and many other poor countries. And I myself grew up on welfare. There are so many wonderful things that we have in Tolland and in America. So many, many opportunities and blessings. Never feel persecuted or you will be the one who loses. This has developed into a discussion about life. In a nutshell, what occurred at the school was not right.

The three lowest funded schools in Connecticut are EastHartford, New Britain and Waterbury. YesRead More that is,per student. Sorry F16 but statistics are easily attainable on line. No, tolland is not on the list of under funded schools.
