School to be Held on Tuesday

The Board of Education voted to hold school to make up for one lost due to snow.

On Wednesday evening, the Board of Education voted unanimously to hold school on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

This day was originally supposed to be a vacation day, but due to the recent snowstorm, and the subsequent loss of three days, the district was looking for a way to make up some time.

So far this year, eight days have been lost. Two have been made up – on Veteran’s Day and the day after – so some ground has been made up. The original last day of school was scheduled for June 14 and with the remaining six days, the school year is pushed into the next week and beyond to that next Monday – June 24.

Superintendent of Schools William Guzman said that he’s trying to be proactive in the matter. He said that in the past, he has received feedback from parents about the “late start to the summer” and how it can interfere with previous arrangements.

Taking days from April vacation is always a possibility, but Guzman said he is hesitant to do that because many people – teachers included – make plans for that week.

Two years ago, Tolland had a full February break. Last year would have been the first year with the shortened, two-day break, but the Tuesday day had to be taken then also.
