Wednesday Meeting Aims to Connect the DOTs on Tolland Green

Proposed modifications are to be discussed.

The Town Council is scheduled to host a special meeting on Wednesday to review a proposed plan to modify areas on and around the Tolland Green.

The meeting is slated for 7 p.m. at the Hicks Municipal Center. The Project is under the direction of the Department of Transportation. 

A packet distributed to town officials outlines the plans:

Premise: Provide "traffic calming," additional "green" areas and improve "pedestrian circulation."

Highlights: 

• About 400 feet of new sidewalk along the south side of Route 74 between the Senior Center and the existing sidewalk. 
• Improvements on Route 74 - road curves away to provide "green area" in front of the Tolland Inn and adjacent homes. 
• Green medians added at the approaches to Route 74 and Route 195 for safe pedestrian crossing and "traffic calming."
• A dedicated left-turn lane from Route 195 to the Hicks Muniucipal Center. 

Premise: Improve the central intersection of routes 195 and 74. 

Highlights 

• Intersection is to be narrowed with area added to the Green. 
• A "T" intersection is not being proposed as shown on the Corridor Study Plan. 
• Traffic on Route 74 approaching the Green from the east will have a stop sign at the Green. 
• Route 195 will not have a stop sign and be a through road.  

Tolland Staff Recommendations

Highlights: 

• Closing access from northerly Carriage Road to Route 74. 
• Making southerly Carriage Road one-way with an exit into Old Post Road.
