Do you watch “Dancing with the Stars” and think that the costumes, dark tans, and rhinestones are from a far away land? The world of glitz and glamour is part of everyday life for local ballroom and latin dance couple, Evgueni Chaoulski and Sara Schilling. The pair has just returned from competing at the 2012 World 10-Dance Championships, held in Canada on October 5th and 6th. They are the only Ballroom couple in Connecticut to have competed in 4 World Championships; 2009 in Tokyo, Japan; 2010 in Kiev, Ukraine; 2011 in Gatineau, Canada; and 2012 in ValleyField, Canada.
Every year, the World Dance Council (WDC), the governing body of dancers around the globe, holds 3 different World DanceSport Championships: International Ballroom, International Latin, and International 10-Dance (both Ballroom and Latin dance divisions combined and judged together). These Championships bring the best dancers on the planet together to pit themselves against each other and vie for the ultimate title of World Champion.
The 10-Dance World Championship consists of two days of intense competition. The first day is the Latin section, where the dancers compete in five Latin dances; Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble, and Jive. The second day of competition is the Ballroom division consisting of Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot, and Quickstep. Each country sends their two best representatives to these championships. Evgueni and Sara are proud to have qualified to represent Evgueni’s home country of Canada, not once, but four times.
When they’re not competing, Evgueni and Sara now teach and provide top quality dance instruction to the Connecticut and western Massachusetts communities at North American Dance Academy. The studio opened on with Laura Steil, a fellow instructor and world class competitor. Their studio is located at 127 Pearl Street, Enfield, Connecticut.
Sara, Evgueni, and Laura have seen how dancing enriches people’s lives in a way that no other activity can. Dancing is not just another form of exercise. It is also a way to meet new people, take on a challenge, relieve the stress of the daily grind, and express yourself, all while staying in shape. It’s a way to do something for yourself, for your relationship, or even makes a unique gift for friends. At North American Dance Academy they offer something for everyone: group classes, private lessons, social dances and events. Stop by the studio any day of the week and you can feel the warmth and excitement, no matter what kind of class you are attending. It is hard not to catch their contagious energy!
