Artisan Bread Open House Saturday

The bread-makers at Manchester Community College will demonstrate their craft and provide free samples at an open house sponsored by the Bread Bakers Guild of America

When was the last time you bit into a really crusty, chewy, flavorful hunk of bread?

Saturday you can -- for free -- at a celebration of bread and bread-making at Manchester Community College.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., long-time artisan bread-making instructor Dr. John Gibson will open the MCC culinary labs to members in the public interested in great bread and the art of making it.

Gibson and his students will have samples of artisan bread available for tasting and will demonstrate their craft as part of an international event sponsored by The Bread Bakers Guild of America.

According to the Guild, the Bakery Open House was “conceived as a way to celebrate the work of Guild member bakers and bakeries across the country that are turning our vision of ‘real, good bread in every community’ into a reality. This will be a single day where the attention of people across the continent is focused on the bakers and bakeries that provide their daily bread.’”

At MCC -- one of only two places in the state participating in the open house -- Gibson and his helpers will be showing how they use various “pre-ferments” and other techniques to make unique, high-quality artisan bread.  They also will answer the public’s questions about how to bake great bread at home and will provide tours of their kitchens. Various bread-making texts will be available to see, as will information on MCPc’s for-credit and non-credit bread-making classes.

The MCC culinary labs are on the second floor of the Lowe Student Services Center on the MCC campus off Hills town Road in Manchester.

The Bread Bakers Guild of America is a non-profit alliance of professional bakers, farmers, millers, suppliers, educators, students, home bakers, technical experts and bakery owners and managers. Formed in 1993, it is dedicated to shaping knowledge of artisan bread and bread-making through education.
