Arts Center Features Works by Talented Tolland High Students

The opening reception was held on Saturday, March 3rd.

A student art show, sponsored by the Arts of Tolland, is currently being held at the , located at 22 Tolland Green. The opening reception of the exhibit took place on Saturday, March 3, when guests were able to meet the artists, enjoy refreshments and, of course, view the artwork on display.

Entrants to the show consisted of students in grades 9-12 and featured works in a variety of media.

Senior Christi MacDonald not only won a Scholastic Arts Gold Key award for her drawing of an “interior space,” but she also won the Gold Key for her entire portfolio.

“This was a project in my advanced placement art class,” said MacDonald of her individual award piece.

The drawing features kitchen cabinets and the range in her family’s kitchen.

“As kids we used to pull out the drawers then climb up them like stairs.”

Family life is an inspiration in MacDonald’s work. Another of her drawings is of her brother Brody.

“When I go to college, I’m going to miss my brother’s quirkiness and the weirdness of my family,” she joked. MacDonald received a scholarship and has been accepted into the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia.

Junior Rachel Watson plans to get a double major in art when she attends college in a couple years, but for now is taking every art class that is available to her. Her impressive jewelry work is on display at the center.

The student artwork will be on display again today, March 4, as well as next weekend, March 10 and 11, from noon to 4 p.m. For additional information on the exhibit or directions, please call Arts of Tolland at 860-871-7405.
