“Starting Your College Search”
TOLLAND – College admissions coach Heather Ricker-Gilbert will explain how to start the college search for high school students and their parents at a free, informative workshop being held Wednesday, March 7 at 7 p.m. at the Tolland Public Library.
Ricker-Gilbert’s talk is being sponsored by the Tolland Public Library Foundation as part of its “Year of the Young Adult” initiative. She is a former member of the Foundation’s board of directors.
Ricker-Gilbert has served as a faculty member, administrator and student advisor at the University of Connecticut, Penn State University, Eastern Connecticut State University and Manchester Community College. She will cover such topics as starting your research, deciding on a major, finding scholarships, selecting high school courses and planning college visits.
Ricker-Gilbert will also provide advice on useful college search reference books. Following her recommendations, the Foundation has purchased some of the books for library patrons to use.
Ricker-Gilbert works as a college search consultant through her web site, collegegateways.com.
Her talk is free and open to the public, but registration is required. To register, call the library at 860-871-3620. It is located at 21 Tolland Green in Tolland.

About the Year of the Young Adult
The Foundation launched this initiative in October 2011 to encourage more middle- and high-school students to visit and use a town treasure - their public library. Funded through the Phoebe Dimock King and Elizabeth C. King Eaton Endowment, the program is providing for more software, guest speakers on college admissions and related topics, books, book club discussions and author visits for students aged 12 and up.
