Photo Gallery: Tolland Kindergartners Make Stone Soup

Birch Grove kindergarten students learned the importance of community and helping others while enjoying delicious "stone soup."

Tolland's youngest students enjoyed "stone soup" together on Tuesday as part of their social study curriculum on community and helping others.

Teacher Dyan Beaton explained that the students read the "Stone Soup" book as part of their studies. The folk tale commonly relates the story of a group of travelers with an empty pot who stop to make soup in a village. They only put a stone in the soup and one-by-one villagers stop by to add one ingredient to the concoction, eventually creating a delicious meal.

Beaton said that each kindergartner brought in a vegetable to class to add to the soup, which was partially prepared in class and then brought home by a room parent to finish up the cooking.

And with chef hats and holiday place mats at the ready, all of the kindergarten classes gathered in the cafeteria to try out their collaborative creations.
