Birch Grove, TIS Celebrate 'Read Across Tolland Day'

Special guest Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman stopped by to commemorate the day.

Students from and gathered at the primary school on Wednesday to celebrate Read Across Tolland Day.

The students belatedly commemorated Dr. Seuss' birthday, which is in March, as well as the success of the recent TEPTO book fair. Donations from the fair support the schools' libraries.

Birch Grove administrators Thomas Swanson and Michael Moynihan set the tone for the day early on, greeting students in tropical themed costumes. (The costumes, selected by TEPTO, recalled the luau theme of March's book fair.)

"We're excited that we are able to have such generous donations for our library," said Swanson as he welcomed arrving students in his SpongeBob SquarePants costume. "This helps build our library for years to come. I can't thank TEPTO enough for what they do supporting our schools."

The organization raised around $500 for the school libraries, Swanson said.

The schools also celebrated reading with visits from special guests like Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman, local children's librarian Ginny Brousseau, several resident troopers and many more volunteers, who stopped by to read to students.

Students from Tolland Intermediate School also visited to partner up with primary school classes and create reading buddy pairs.
