Schatzlein Breaks THS Basketball Record

Kristin Schatzlein surpassed the previous girls basketball scoring record set by her older sister, Kelly.

Kristin Schatzlein is finishing up her senior year at before heading off to join the Fairfield University basketball team, but the driven player is still adding to her legacy in Tolland High sports by shattering the girls basketball all-time high score, a record previously held by her sister.

"My biggest word for her is efficient," said girls varsity basketball head coach Rocco Sansone, adding that Schatzlein applies her strengths to a variety of positions on the team, rather than just focusing on pumping up her high score.

"She's not one-dimensional," he said. "She's very versatile."

According to Sansone, Schatzlein stepped forward as the all-time girls basetball scorer after surpassing her sister Kelly's high school career record of 1,251 points. He says that Kristin averages about 18.4 points a game, which easily allowed her to gain the 21 points she needed to catch up to the record this December.

Sansone said that she currently scored 1,359 points during her high school career.

And despite breaking a school and family record, Sansone said that Schatzlein will continue to focus on the success of the team, as opposed to forwarding her individual success.

"It's got to be about the whole team," he said. "She's not that kid who throws the ball 35 times a game."

And after talking to Schatzlein, it's clear she wants to focus on one last goal before moving on to college basketball.

"We just want to win states for the first year. That's our goal now," she said.
