School Board Discusses Tolland Test Scores

The school board gathered for its first meeting of the school year on Wednesday evening.

The school board discussed Tolland's performance on the CMT and CAPT tests at its first meeting of the school year on Wednesday night.

While the , the data has been reorganized to examine Tolland's progress from several angles. Attached above, the district's CMT scores are broken down by year (e.g. comparing last year's fourth grade students to this year's) and by cohort (e.g. following a class and comparing its performance from third grade into fourth grade). 

When examining the performace of grades three through eight by cohort, Tolland saw overwhelming improvement in almost all areas, with the exceptions of fifth-grade writing and eighth-grade reading.

The results were more mixed when comparing the grades by year, with fourth and eighth grade students seeing general declines in scores.

Tolland's CAPT scores are above the state average, but are still below the average for the District Reference Group, a collection of similar school districts to Tolland.

Superintendent William Guzman said that high school faculty members are focusing intently on the curriculum and teaching to the standard to continue to raise the scores, most of which have seen steady improvement since 2007, according to the attached data.

The district's school improvement goals were also included in the meeting agenda and can be viewed on the school district's website.

The school board is scheduled to meet next on September 12 at 7:30 p.m.
