The school board has selected Drummey Rosane Anderson Inc. to develop the School Facility Utilization &  Assessment Study. DRA has already conducted building evaluations prior to meeting with town residents at the community workshops.

DRA’s study will consider the broadest range of options and possibilities to address the needs of Tolland’s school system, the board has said.

In the third of four proposed workshops, the board is seeking public input.

Children 3 and older and are invited to attend with their families. Age-appropriate activities will be planned.

Is there any information about what plans are being shared at that meeting so residents go into the meeting knowing the ideas before hand. I won't be able to attend the meeting on Thursday, but I do want to share some concerns with residents. I am concerned about the total capacity of the schools. At the last meeting, I asked how DRA got the numbers for their total capacity. At Birch Grove they had put 25 children to a classroom. This led DRA to show that Birch Grove was under utilizing its space. 25 children is not only a large class, but also not conducive to good instruction. 22, the current class size for 1st Grade is also not conducive to good instruction. As we consider spaces for our children to learn, I hope we insure that we have the space to provide class sizes that allow for excellent instruction and intervention. Secondly I would really like to see the principals involved endorsing some of the suggestions that are being made. They are wonderful experts in growing learners. I would love to see what an ideal school breakdown, given the financial constraints our town faces, is to them. Please provide the principals with an opportunity to share their views on the plans being made. I want to know what the pros/cons are from their perspective.
