Tolland Board of Education Adopts 2011-2012 School Calendar

Summer unofficially ends on Aug. 31 for public school students here under the 183-day school calendar approved Wednesday evening by the board of education.

Though the summer break from classes hasn’t started for public school students here they now know when it will be over.

The board of education Wednesday evening adopted the 2011-2012 school-district calendar that has students in grades K through 12 returning to the classroom, tanned and rested, on Aug. 31.

The 183 days of classroom instruction approved by the board is three days longer than the minimum required under state law which is 180 days.

Teachers, however, whose calendar is 188 days long, will be returning two days earlier on Aug. 29, for in service meetings.

As the school year progresses students and teachers will not be in class on the following dates: Aug. 29-30, teacher in-service training; Sept. 5, Labor Day; Oct. 10, Columbus Day; Oct. 11, teacher in-service; Nov. 10, teacher in-service;  Nov. 11, Veterans Day; Nov. 24-25, Thanksgiving; Dec. 9, K-8 parent-teacher conferences and Dec. 26-Jan. 2, winter break.

Then Jan. 16, Martin Luther King Day; Tolland High School mid-semester day, to be determined; Feb. 20, Presidents Day; Feb. 21, winter vacation; April 6, contractual holiday; April 16-20, spring break and May 28, Memorial Day.

Half days of instruction are scheduled for: Sept. 21, K-12 teacher in-service; Oct. 19, teacher in-service; Nov. 23, Thanksgiving; Dec. 8, K-5 parent teacher conferences; Jan. 25, K-12 teacher in-service; March 7, K-12 parent-teacher conferences and June 14, 2012, which is the last day of school.

All bets about June 14’s being the last day of classes of the 2011-2012 school year if this year’s winter weather repeats itself in the next 12 months. Make up days due to inclement weather will be scheduled after June 13 through June 22 as needed. If more school days need to be made up, school officials will tap into the April vacation and begin with April 16.

Graduation ceremonies at Tolland High School will take place on June 14.
